Shanti Teresa Lakra, a dedicated Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has emerged as a symbol of selfless service for her decade-long commitment to protecting the vulnerable Onge and Jarawa tribes.
Following the devastating 2004 tsunami, Lakra moved her life to a forest settlement to provide healthcare to the Onge people, and more recently, she braved turbulent seas and dense jungles to ensure the Jarawa tribe received COVID-19 vaccinations. Her efforts have been instrumental in preventing the extinction of these Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) while bridging the gap between modern medicine and indigenous communities.
A Life Dedicated To The Deep Jungle
Lakra’s journey into the heart of the Andaman jungles began when she chose to live in a tent alongside the Onge tribe after their habitat was ravaged by the tsunami. By learning their language and respecting their customs, she earned their trust a feat rarely achieved by outsiders. During the height of the pandemic, Lakra’s role became even more critical as she navigated the high seas to reach the Jarawas.
Commenting on the challenges of tribal healthcare, local health officials noted, “The dedication shown by frontline workers like Shanti Lakra is the only reason we have been able to shield our most isolated populations from global health crises; her presence provides a sense of security that goes beyond clinical care.”
Legacy of Compassion and Resilience
This is not the first time Lakra’s work has been recognized; she was previously awarded the Padma Shri and the National Florence Nightingale Award for her exceptional services. Her work involves not just administering vaccines or medicines, but also educating tribes on hygiene and nutrition while ensuring their cultural heritage remains undisturbed.
The Andaman and Nicobar administration has consistently highlighted that the survival of the Onge tribe whose numbers were once dwindling dangerously is a testament to the sustained grassroots medical intervention led by Lakra and her peers. Her story serves as a reminder of the immense personal sacrifices made by healthcare workers in the country’s most remote corners.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that Shanti Teresa Lakra’s story is a profound masterclass in empathy and human solidarity. In an era where healthcare is often viewed through the lens of infrastructure and technology, Lakra reminds us that the heartbeat of medicine is the human connection. By leaving the comforts of the city to serve those forgotten by the mainstream, she embodies the spirit of harmony and coexistence.
Her bravery in the face of natural disasters and pandemics is a call to action for all of us to look beyond ourselves and contribute to a kinder, more inclusive world. We salute her spirit and hope her journey inspires a new generation of healthcare heroes.
