A 75-year-old Thane resident, identified as Gopalakrishna Subbaiya Pillai, died after suffering a heart attack while attending the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on October 2. According to police, Pillai reached the venue around 4.30 pm to watch the demonstration and complained of chest pain around 5 pm near Gate No. 6.
His friend and police personnel helped him, while a doctor at the venue provided preliminary treatment before he was taken to Sushrusha Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment, with doctors attributing his death to a heart attack. The police said an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered and that his body was handed over to his family after they raised no objection.
The incident took place amid a large CJP gathering demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Chest Pain At Venue
Pillai, a resident of Dosti West County in Thane, had travelled to Shivaji Park to attend or witness the CJP demonstration. Police said he arrived at around 4.30 pm and later began feeling unwell while approaching Gate No. 6. At approximately 5 pm, he complained of chest pain. His friend and police personnel stationed at the protest site immediately came to his assistance.
A doctor present at the venue administered preliminary treatment before Pillai was taken to the nearby Sushrusha Hospital. Despite medical treatment, his condition deteriorated and he was declared dead at the hospital. Police said doctors attributed the death to a heart attack. Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahendra Pandit also confirmed that Pillai died during treatment after suffering the cardiac event.
The police response has also been formally recorded. Authorities said an ADR has been registered in connection with the death, while the body was handed over to Pillai’s family after they raised no objection. Reports do not indicate that the authorities have attributed his death to the protest itself. Rather, the available information establishes that he developed chest pain while at the gathering and subsequently died after being taken to hospital. This distinction is important, particularly because the protest was held amid a large crowd and in sunny conditions, but there is currently no official finding linking those circumstances directly to the cardiac event.
Protest Amid Tensions
The incident unfolded during a major CJP demonstration at Shivaji Park, where thousands gathered on October 2 to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The organisation has raised objections to the SIR exercise concerning electoral rolls and has called for greater transparency and accountability in the functioning and appointment of election officials.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had earlier announced that the Mumbai gathering would mark the beginning of a wider campaign, with protests planned in other parts of the country and a proposed demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar later this month.
The gathering had also been preceded by a dispute over permission. Mumbai Police had denied the CJP permission to hold the proposed protest at Shivaji Park, citing restrictions on gatherings at the location as well as concerns related to traffic and noise. Despite this, the demonstration went ahead, with a significant police presence around the area. The protest remained largely peaceful, according to reports, although the wider campaign has generated disagreement between organisers, local residents and authorities over the location and manner of the demonstrations.
The CJP’s demands extend beyond the resignation of the CEC. Dipke has called for the electoral roll prepared in 2025 to be frozen and for a more transparent and independent process for appointing the next Election Commissioner, including civil society participation. The group has also said it intends to take its campaign to several cities. Meanwhile, concerns and allegations surrounding the SIR process remain a matter of political and public debate, with the Election Commission rejecting allegations of wrongdoing.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The death of a 75-year-old man at a public gathering is a deeply human tragedy that deserves to be approached with sensitivity, regardless of the political cause being represented.
Public demonstrations are an important part of democratic expression, but they also bring responsibilities for organisers, authorities and participants—particularly when large crowds include elderly people and others who may be physically vulnerable. Ensuring accessible medical assistance, clear emergency arrangements, safe crowd management and adequate support at public gatherings can help reduce risks without undermining the right to peaceful expression.
At the same time, political disagreements should not come at the cost of empathy or dignity. As debates over electoral processes continue, how can organisers, authorities and citizens work together to ensure that peaceful democratic participation remains both safe and respectful for everyone?
