India has expressed “deep concern” over a reported drone attack near Makkah in Saudi Arabia, after Saudi authorities said their air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Islam’s holiest city on September 15, before it entered restricted airspace.
Responding to media queries on September 16, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remained concerned because of Makkah’s “special significance” to Muslims worldwide, while reiterating its condemnation of attacks on Saudi sovereign territory and actions that endanger civilian lives and infrastructure.
Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki attributed the drone to Yemen’s Houthi movement and said it was headed towards Makkah; the Houthis, however, have denied targeting the holy city, with Houthi Politburo member Hazem al-Assad reportedly describing the allegation as a “worn-out lie”.
No strike on Makkah itself was reported, and Saudi authorities said the drone was destroyed before entering the prohibited airspace. India has called for an early restoration of peace and stability amid the escalating Saudi-Houthi confrontation.
Drone Intercepted South Of Makkah
According to the Saudi-led coalition, the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercepted the drone at around 6:50 pm local time on September 15, before it could enter Makkah’s restricted airspace.
Al-Maliki said the incident represented what Saudi authorities considered the second attempt to target the holy city, citing a ballistic missile incident in 2017, and warned that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims was a “red line”.
The incident came after Saudi Civil Defence issued emergency alerts warning of a “potential danger” in Makkah, Jeddah and Taif, asking residents to remain indoors and stay away from windows and open areas; authorities subsequently announced that the immediate danger had passed.
New Delhi, meanwhile, stressed the wider humanitarian and religious sensitivity of the episode. Jaiswal said India “reiterates its condemnation of attacks on the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and of actions that endanger civilian lives and infrastructure”.
The MEA also highlighted Makkah’s significance to Muslims around the world and called for peace and stability to be restored in the region.
Houthis Reject Saudi Allegation
The episode comes against the backdrop of an intensifying confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, which controls large parts of Yemen and has used drones and missiles during the conflict. The Houthis have categorically rejected Saudi claims that Makkah was their intended target.
Hazem al-Assad, a member of the group’s political bureau, described the accusation as a “worn-out lie”, while the group has maintained that it did not target Makkah or Islamic holy sites. This distinction remains important: Saudi Arabia says it intercepted a Houthi drone heading towards Makkah, while the Houthis dispute that the holy city was targeted.
The Saudi account therefore establishes that its forces intercepted a drone south of Makkah, but the intended target remains contested between the parties. The episode has nevertheless heightened concerns because Makkah is home to the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba and receives millions of Muslims for Hajj and Umrah.
The incident has also generated misinformation online: footage circulated as showing the September 15 interception has been challenged as older material rather than verified video of the latest event.
Against this backdrop, reports and video circulating on social media should be treated cautiously unless their date, location and source can be independently established.
