A 19-year-old man, identified as Ayan Ahmed Tanveer, has been arrested by the Amravati Rural Police in Amravati district, Maharashtra, for allegedly sexually exploiting minor girls, recording obscene videos without consent, and using them for blackmail and intimidation.
Police say at least eight victims have been officially identified so far, though preliminary investigations and recovered digital evidence indicate that the scale could be significantly larger, with allegations of over 350 videos and claims of up to 180 potential victims being examined.
A second accused has also been arrested for allegedly circulating the content widely on social media, intensifying the case’s severity and raising concerns about a possible wider digital dissemination network. The accused is currently in police custody under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the POCSO Act, and the Information Technology Act, with forensic analysis underway.
Investigation Expands, Victims Report More
According to police officials in Amravati, the accused allegedly targeted minor girls by first befriending them through social media platforms and gradually gaining their trust before exploiting them. Investigators state that he is suspected of recording the acts without consent and later using the videos as a tool for coercion and blackmail, creating a sustained pattern of intimidation.
Amravati Rural Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand Singuri confirmed that “efforts are ongoing to identify all victims appearing in the videos” and added that teams are working to map the full extent of content stored, deleted, or circulated from the accused’s device. Authorities have seized his mobile phone and recovered multiple objectionable videos, while forensic specialists continue to retrieve deleted files to reconstruct the timeline and scale of offences.
Police further confirmed that the second accused allegedly played a crucial role in amplifying the harm by downloading and circulating objectionable content online. Reports indicate that nearly 100 videos were shared across social media platforms after being accessed from the primary accused’s device, causing rapid dissemination and public outrage.
The second accused has been formally arrested and is being produced before the court, with investigators expected to seek Police Custody Remand (PCR) to probe deeper into his role and identify whether additional individuals were involved in distribution. Authorities have also stated that the accused remains in custody until 21 April 2026, while investigations continue under multiple legal provisions, including those under child protection and cybercrime laws.
Political Row, Protests, Crackdown
The case has quickly taken on a political dimension, with allegations linking the accused to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi. While some political voices have claimed prior associations, local representatives of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen have clarified that the accused is no longer associated with the party, though past links may have existed.
On the other hand, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, including Kirit Somaiya, have demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and strict punitive action, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the scale of public concern.
The incident has also triggered widespread protests and public unrest in parts of Amravati, particularly in Paratwada and Achalpur, where local groups held demonstrations and called for swift justice. A bandh was observed in certain areas following meetings organised by community groups, further heightening tensions. In response to escalating anger and the circulation of sensitive content, police have increased security deployment and urged citizens to maintain calm while supporting the investigation.
Authorities have also emphasised that sharing or identifying victims in such cases is a punishable offence, and have set up special reporting channels facilitated by female officers to encourage survivors to come forward in a safe and confidential manner.
In a parallel administrative development, local authorities reportedly initiated demolition action on the accused’s residence following prior municipal notices, with portions of the property being razed using heavy machinery. The move, carried out under official supervision, has drawn significant attention and debate, reflecting the heightened public sensitivity surrounding the case and broader concerns about deterrence and accountability in such crimes.
Child Safety, Digital Exploitation Concerns
Investigators believe the case may reveal broader patterns of exploitation once forensic analysis is completed and more victims are identified. While official confirmation currently stands at eight victims, police acknowledge that the number could rise as more individuals come forward or are identified through video evidence.
Officials are also exploring whether the case involves a wider organised network or whether it is limited to individual actions and secondary circulation by the arrested co-accused. The investigation is being closely monitored due to the sensitive nature of the material and the involvement of minors.
