In a distressing incident of medical apathy, 89-year-old Suhasini Mathekar passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, after a rat reportedly bit her inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Hospital in Bhayandar West, Maharashtra.
Admitted on March 12 and placed on ventilator support, Mathekar suffered severe injuries when a rodent gnawed at her hand late Sunday night. The family discovered the wounds the following morning, sparking intense protests from relatives and political activists like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who are demanding the suspension of negligent staff.
While the hospital administration has faced severe backlash, official statements regarding the exact cause of death whether from the injuries or underlying conditions remain under investigation.
Lapses In Critical Care And Family Outrage
The gravity of the situation came to light at approximately 6:00 AM on Monday when relatives visiting Mathekar noticed her hand was bleeding profusely. According to family members, they saw a rat scurrying away from her bed, suggesting the animal had been feeding on her while she was incapacitated and unable to defend herself.
“Our grandmother was already battling for her life on a ventilator.
If rats are roaming inside a sensitive area like the ICU, it raises serious questions about supervision,” a relative stated. The incident has highlighted a catastrophic failure in sanitisation and monitoring, as the on-duty medical staff were allegedly unaware of the rodent’s presence until the family pointed it out.
A Pattern Of Negligence At Bhimsen Joshi Hospital
This is not the first time Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Hospital, a primary government facility in the Mira-Bhayandar region, has come under scrutiny. Local residents and activists have frequently complained about staff shortages, the absence of senior doctors during night shifts, and deteriorating hygiene standards.
Following the news of Mathekar’s death, MNS workers staged a massive protest at the hospital, attempting to enter the Dean’s office to demand immediate accountability.
The hospital administration has acknowledged the “unfortunate” nature of the event, though a formal inquiry committee has been set up to determine how a rodent managed to breach the sterile environment of a fourth-floor ICU.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that a hospital specifically an ICU is a sanctuary of healing where the most vulnerable citizens should feel safest. The death of Suhasini Mathekar is not just a “freak accident”; it is a systemic failure of dignity and care.
When a patient on life support is subjected to such a horrific ordeal, it reflects a deep-seated rot in our public healthcare infrastructure. We stand for a world where empathy and hygiene are non-negotiable pillars of medicine.
It is high time that authorities move beyond “committees” and ensure that such dehumanising negligence never recurs.
