A major controversy has erupted at University of Lucknow after assistant professor Paramjeet Singh from the Zoology Department was arrested over allegations of making obscene phone calls to a female student and offering to leak examination question papers in exchange for sexual favours. The case came to light after an alleged audio clip of the conversation went viral on social media, prompting outrage on campus in Lucknow.
The student reportedly informed university authorities after suffering severe mental distress, following which the university’s Controller of Examinations filed a formal complaint at Hasanganj Police Station. Police officials confirmed that the accused was taken into custody for questioning after an FIR was lodged based on a complaint submitted by Controller of Examinations Vidyanand Tripathi.
The university administration stated that the student experienced significant emotional distress following the alleged interactions and approached authorities seeking help. In response, Vice Chancellor JP Saini directed the Internal Complaints Committee to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours. In an official statement, the university said that “any act damaging the institution’s dignity and academic environment would not be tolerated” and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe campus environment.
The incident also sparked demonstrations across the campus, with ABVP workers protesting and demanding immediate suspension and dismissal of the accused professor. Jay Srivastava, president of the ABVP’s Lucknow University unit, reportedly said there was “no place for such mentality in a prestigious institution” and urged authorities to ensure strict legal action under laws relating to sexual harassment and examination malpractice.

Despite the serious accusations, Paramjeet Singh has denied any wrongdoing and maintained that the viral audio clip is either manipulated or being used selectively to target him. Police officials have not yet publicly commented on the authenticity of the audio recording, stating that forensic examination and digital verification procedures are underway. Investigators are also examining whether there was any actual attempt to compromise examination confidentiality or whether the alleged offer remained limited to verbal communication.
