Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has claimed that in the last 30 months, his government has pulled the state out of an identity crisis and changed the perception of the state.

“On March 19, 2017, the Bharatiya Janata Party government was formed in the state after a 14-year-exile,” Adityanath told reporters in Lucknow. “In the past two-and-half years Uttar Pradesh was pulled out from a state of an identity crisis as we converted challenges to opportunities. The biggest achievement of my team has been changing the perception of Uttar Pradesh and restoring its identity,” he said.

Claiming that the law and order situation in the state has improved, Adityanath said that in the last two-and-a-half years, there has been no riot in the state. He asserted that criminals are either in jail or have fled from the state. “The state has seen a significant decline in dacoity, rape, extortion, loot and clashes. It has also seen as many as 41 new police stations being opened. The major festivals in the state have been celebrated in peace,” he claimed.

He said that the “safety of women and girls” is a priority for his government. “Safety of women and girls is our priority. The prosecution is being speeded up in cases involving crimes against women. Speedy trial and charge sheets are our focus,” NDTV quoted Adityanath as saying. He defended his track record and said that rape cases were down 36 per cent.

The Chief Minister’s claims come at a time when Unnao MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar has a rape case against him, while the former Union Minister Chinmayanand has been arrested for the alleged rape of a law student.
