A 21-year-old woman in Bhopal who wished to remarry after her husband allegedly gave triple talaq, was raped by a Tantrik on the pretext of ‘Nikah Halala’.

Nikah Halala is a practice in which a woman who wishes to remarry the man who gave her triple talaq, first she has to marry another man, consummates the marriage, get divorced again and then she can marry her earlier husband.

Both the woman’s husband and the Tantrik were arrested after she registered a complaint at Aishbagh police station.

The woman alleged that on November 23, her husband gave her triple talaq, which is now illegal after the couple had a fight. The incident happened in Ashoka Garden area of Bhopal.

However, the husband later wished to remarry her. Consequently, 50-year-old Anwar Baba, the woman’s ‘nikahi baap’ (one who offers the bride’s hand to the groom during the wedding), told them that they would first have to perform Nikah Halala.

The woman alleged that following the triple talaq, she was taken to a flat and raped by the tantrik on the pretext of Nikah Halala.

When the woman came back home, her husband refused to take her in, following which she narrated the incident to her family and later reported the matter to Aishbagh police station.

Police registered a case under Section 343 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code against her husband and tantrik. They were both arrested and produced in court. They have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
