As many as 90 foreign students enrolled in a fake university established by the US government have been arrested this week by Federal law enforcement agencies. Most of these students are from India.

With the current over 250 students have been arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These students were lured to enrol in the University of Farmington, which is now closed, in the Detroit metropolitan area by the Department of Homeland.

In March, the ICE had arrested 161 students from the fake university established by it. There we 600 students, most of them Indians, enrolled in it when it was closed in March.

An ICE spokesperson speaking on behalf of the 250 students arrested, said that “nearly 80 per cent were granted voluntary departure and have departed the United States”, The Times Of India reported.

About half of the remaining 20 per cent have received a final order of removal. According to what federal prosecutors claim, the students knew this was a fake university as there were no classes.

A criminal chargesheet was filed against eight recruiters, seven of whom have pleaded guilty. They have been indicted for committing visa fraud, as well as for harbouring aliens for profit by the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The US “trapped the vulnerable people who just wanted to maintain (Legal Immigration) status,” Rahul Reddy, a Texas attorney who represented some of the students in Detroit said.

Students who were enrolled in the university came to the US on a valid visa issued by the US embassy in India, legally. Around $2,500 was charged by the university per quarter for the graduate programme and the average cost is $1,000.
