Telangana: In A First, 506 Students Of Social And Tribal Welfare Schools Crack JEE Mains

In a first, as many as 506 students from the Telangana Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions (TTWREIs) and Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions (TSWREIs) succeeded in cracking JEE Mains, 2019. They have qualified for JEE Advanced, which is scheduled to be held this month.

This is a huge achievement as for the first time, defying deprivation and poverty, such a large number of students from both the institutions have qualified for one of the biggest examinations of the country.

Social welfare institutions, TTWREIS and TSWREIs are residential colleges that the State government runs to provide education to underprivileged children belonging to the ST and SC communities. The students who have cracked the examination belong to tribal hamlets and marginalised villages. Their parents work as vegetable vendors, tea sellers, clerics, agricultural labourers and masons.


Defying all odds

307 out of these 506 students are from social welfare residential institutions, while 199 of them are from tribal welfare institutions. In the open category, 22 social welfare and 13 tribal welfare students have qualified, reported The News Minute.

Among the students, Rajnikesh Vardhan of Social Welfare IIT College, Gowlidoddi, got 203 marks out of 360, with 98.41 percentile. With 95.3 percentile, Korra Mahesh of Tribal Welfare IIT Study centre, Rajendra Nagar secured 410th rank in the ST category with 95.3 percentile. In the ST category, Rajendra Nagar College’s  Azmeera Mahesh bagged all India 486th rank. K Priyason and L Tejaswini from social welfare schools scored 93.62 and 93.4 percentile respectively.

Congratulating the students on their achievement, Dr RS Praveen Kumar, secretary of the institutions, said, “The current year’s results remain a golden lettered moment. The entire credit goes to the teachers and principals for their hard work and dedication.”

He further thanked the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Minister for Welfare Koppula Eshwar for their hand in bringing a new generation of students from these marginalised communities under the KG-PG Mission. “Under the KG-PG Mission, the government is providing free long-term coaching facilities to poor students on par with the corporate institutions, besides nutritious food and coaching materials free,” the secretary said.

In the intermediate board results declared recently, students of the welfare schools significantly outperformed the state’s other government colleges and private colleges. Even in the recent senior inter results, the welfare institution students surpassed the state’s average pass percentage of 64.8% with a pass percentage of 84.31%. As against the state average of 59%, students TSWREIS students pass percentage of 79.63% in the junior inter results.
