Recently, Telangana witnessed a huge furore from students and parents over alleged “goof-up” in the State intermediate examination results. These protests were preceded by unfortunate suicides of more than 13 students. After a three-membered committee appointed by the Telangana government submitted its report, Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) suspended a supervisor for neglecting the flaws in the evaluation process and a teacher for awarding 0 marks instead of 99 to a student.
Students and parents protest
After the Telangana intermediate board results were out, over 3 lakh students had failed, some students had scored zero. Parents and students’ doubts over the efficiency of the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education were reinforced when certain students who had scored considerably well in their previous examinations had failed terribly in the intermediate board examination. Some had even scored zero. The announcement of results was followed by a series of unfortunate student suicides. The suicides inspired state-wide criticism and protests. While a lot of students chose to challenge the board and apply for re-evaluation, a few chose to end their lives. The situation and students’ anger grew so severe that the police had to take nearly 24 members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) into preventive custody.
Telangana Government reacts
Relenting to the massive protests and outrage, the Telangana government set up a three-membered committee to probe into the matter. The committee submitted a report on 27 April, in which it found a teacher guilty of faulty evaluation. BIE announced on Sunday (28 April 2019) that it has imposed a fine of 5,000 against Uma Devi, a private school teacher who had evaluated Navya, a 12th-grade student’s Telugu paper. Instead of marking Navya 99, she had awarded her with zero marks. Uma Devi has been suspended by her school management, reports NDTV. BIE also suspended Vijay Kumar, who was appointed as the scrutiniser, for neglecting the faults in the evaluation process.
Owing to the disappointment and anger of students and parents across the state, the Telangana government announced free evaluation of over 3 lakh students who were declared failed in the state intermediate examination.
“BJP feels the entire process has to be corrected. So far, 23 students have committed suicide. BJP wants to take it to the logical conclusion and hence state BJP president K Laxman will observe an indefinite fast from Monday at the party office here, demanding a probe by a sitting High Court judge to fix responsibility,” BJP national general secretary P Muralidhar Rao told Financial Express.
