The Jharkhand High Court on December 10 granted bail to six of the 13 accused in Tabrez Ansari mob lynching case.

The advocate of the accused, AK Sahani, informed the Justice R Mukhopadhyay that neither the names of six accused were mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) filed in regard to the mob lynching case nor the main accused had implicated them during police integration.

The defending counsel further pointed out that the video failed to provide details on whose hit caused Ansari’s death. The six accused – Bhimsen Mandal, Chamu Nayak, Mahesh Mahali, Satyanarayan Nayak, Madan Nayak and Vikram Mandal – have been in jail since June 25.

On June 17, 2019, a mob gheraoed Tabreez Ansari in Saraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand when he was stealing a motorcycle. He was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten for 12 hours. A video of the incident went viral on the social video. Ansari was also forced to chant Jai Shri Ram and Jai Hanuman.

Later cops took Ansari in custody and later produced him in a court which sent him for judicial remand. The police later said that Ansari fell ill on June 22 and was rushed to a hospital where he later declared dead.

In September, the Jharkhand Police investigating the lynching dropped the murder charges in the first chargesheet, concluding that Ansari had died of a cardiac arrest due to stress and not because of thrashing by the mob. However, after facing serious criticism, the Jharkhand police reinstated murder charges against the 13 accused.
