Late on Tuesday, November 26, a 25-year-old student from a law university in Ranchi was abducted and gang-raped by a group of armed men. Police have arrested 12 people, who have confessed to the crime.

The woman was abducted from a spot which is about 8 km from the chief minister’s official residence on Kanke Road. The new police line is also close to the area. Further, the locality also has the residences of the director-general of police, chief justice of the high court and leader of the opposition in the Jharkhand assembly.

According to police sources, the woman was talking to her friend near a bus stop at Sangrampur village, 4 km from the campus, when two men arrived on a bike and took her with them at gunpoint.

They drove some distance after which their bike ran out of petrol. The men then called some of their friends and asked them to bring a car.

Driving to a nearby brick kiln, the men took turns to rape the woman. They called some more friends to the spot, and they too raped her.

On the morning of Wednesday, November 27, the woman managed to reach the Kanke police station in “a bad physical condition”, where she lodged a complaint. The police then arrested 12 men, all of who are 18 to 30 years of age.

Those arrested include Sunil Munda, Kuldeep Oraon, Sunil Oraon, Sandeep Tirkey, Ajay Munda, Rajan Oraon, Naveen Oraon, Aman Oraon, Basant Kachhap, Ravi Oraon, Rohit Oraon and Rishi Oraon.

A car, bike, a country-made pistol, eight mobile phones and victim’s damaged phone were recovered from the perpetrators.
