Refusing to entertain a mercy petition by a BTech student who was unable to get an engineering degree in nine years, The Punjab and Haryana High Court came down hard on him, asking him to stop pursuing the course and save the nation’s resources. The court asked the student, who is from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, and is currently left with 17 compartment exams, to study for any other profession but ‘not engineering’, despite him starting it nine years ago.

Appearing before the court of the chief justice, the petitioner said that following his admission in NIT in 2009, the institution awarded him the compartments during for years of the course. Another four years was given to him so that he could reappear for the exams he could not clear, as reported by India Today.

“Do not become an engineer”

Following his request to the court to give him just one more chance to reappear for and clear the compartments, the court said it does not sympathize with people who waste the resources of the country. The court further said that the expenses that the government incurred during this period of time were manifold compared to the fees paid by the petitioner.

When the petitioner sought mercy, the court said that “you have mercy on this court and do not waste its valuable time and have mercy on this country and do not become an engineer,” said a report by NDTV.

The court further raised the question that if he could not clear his course in nine years, how does he expect to clear 17 compartments in a single attempt? The court asked him to pursue any other profession, for instance, law, but not engineering.

NIT Kurukshetra is formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra, and HRD Ministry-monitored JoSAA undertakes its admission process.
