The CBI on Friday filed a charge sheet against BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar and others in connection with the Unnao rape survivor’s accident in which two of her relatives were killed, dropping murder charges.
In its first charge sheet filed before a special CBI court in Lucknow, Sengar and all others have been booked in the FIR under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation.
The woman, who was allegedly raped by Sengar in 2017, as a minor, battled for life after a truck crashed into the car she was travelling in with her lawyer and some family members in Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh on the 28th of July 2019.
Two of her aunts died in the road accident, and she and her lawyer were critically injured. In order to ensure proper medical attention, she was airlifted from a hospital in Lucknow and brought to the AIIMS after the truck-collision.
Ashish Kumar Pal, driver of the truck that rammed into her car, has been charged for causing death by negligence, causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety, and rash driving. No charges of criminal conspiracy have been slapped against Pal in the CBI charge sheet, said officials.
On the day of the accident none of the security personnel of Uttar Pradesh Police, who were specially assigned to her for safety, accompanied the woman. They were later suspended.
Two days later, on the 30th of July, the CBI booked Sengar for the rape victim’s road accident case.
Sengar is rumoured to have been expelled from the BJP on July 31st this year and was charged for raping a minor in early August.
