An IAS Officer from Meghalaya is being hailed on social media for walking 10 km every week to purchase vegetables and other locally grown groceries.

IAS Officer Ram Singh’s message of cleaner, greener and healthier lifestyle to avoid plastics, reduce vehicular pollution and walk towards fitness has inspired many, including some from his own department.

On Saturday, a picture shared by Ram Singh on Facebook went viral. The picture showed him buying vegetables from a local market with a traditional bamboo basket slung over his shoulder.

“21kgs of weekend organic Vegetable shopping, No plastic, no vehicular pollution, no traffic jam, Fit India, Fit Meghalaya, Eat Organic, Clean & Green Tura, POSHAN, 10km morning walk..” wrote Mr Singh while sharing the picture.

Ram Singh, a 2008 batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, decided to ditch the vehicle and walk to buy daily produce and grocery. He has been serving as the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills since 2017.

“Many complained that it was difficult to walk carrying loads of vegetables. I had suggested them to carry ‘Kokcheng’ (a local bamboo basket) which would even help fight the plastic menace. But they just laughed it off. So my wife and I headed to the market carrying the bamboo basket which I found to be very helpful in many ways,” Ram Singh told NDTV.

In the past as well, Ram Singh, as a deputy commissioner previously helped many villagers plant different varieties of trees in an attempt to fight deforestation. He has even helped renovate government secondary schools in the district by providing them with low-powered harvesting systems and solar-powered classrooms.

Singh’s social media pages are often full of pictures of him travelling to the remotest parts of the district.
