Unable To Get Aadhaar Card Error Rectified, Muslim Man Commits Suicide Fearing NRC Trouble

Muslim youth in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district committed suicide fearing implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengal after allegedly visiting the offices of the district administrations for 17 days to get the spelling of his name corrected on Aadhaar card.

Family members of Milan Mondal, 27, found his body hanging from the bamboo-ceiling of his room. According to his father Distar Mondal, he used to work as a migrant labourer in Kerala and had returned home last month.

“He took the identity proof documents and said he would rectify the spelling mistakes of his name and correct the information mentioned as his residential address. On several occasions, he told me that he was scared of the NRC and we would be uprooted from our ancestral village because of the wrong spelling of his name,” New Indian Express quoted Milan’s father as saying.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a Government of India register containing relevant information for identification of all genuine citizens of India.

Milan’s efforts proved futile even after visiting the local block development office and the office of the district administration. “Since the past three days, he stopped interacting with me. Whenever I asked him, he expressed his fear of NRC’s implementation in Bengal,” his father said.
