Kolkata: Girls Like You Should Be Raped, Woman Tells Girl For Wearing Shorts

Supported by

A middle-aged woman allegedly threatened a 25-year-old student with rape at the Lords Crossing in south Kolkata. The girl, who is pursuing her MPhil at Jadavpur University, was threatened because she was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

When she tried to protest, the woman slapped her in front of the locals.

The girl lodged an FIR with Lake police after a delegation of JU students met the deputy police commissioner of the area.

Police have got the CCTV footage from an eatery and a bank.

What Happened?

“Around 1.30 pm last Thursday, I went out to buy a few stuff just a few metres from my PG accommodation. Soon, I was accosted by this woman near a bank. She was wearing a silk saree. She turned towards me and said: ‘Tomader moto meyeder ekkhuni rape kora uchit’ (girls like you should be raped),” The Times Of India quoted the girl as saying.

The girl then told the lady what she was doing was a criminal offence.

The lady in question abused the student verbally and even slapped her. When she protested, she was slapped again.

However, others tried to step in by this time, and the woman fled the scene after realising that she was surrounded.

“It was for my friends that I could finally manage to reorganize myself. My house owner too played a positive role. It was on the advice of cops that I filed the FIR,” the girl said.

An FIR has been registered under IPC sections related to hurt, wrongful restraint and outraging the modesty of a woman. An officer said that this is a rare case of a woman being accused of outraging the modesty of another woman. He added that the accused lives probably somewhere near Dhakuria, and that the girl might be asked to record her statement in front of a magistrate.
