The ongoing conflict between the students and the management of the SR Medical College and Research Centre in Kerala took a sharp turn when the management served a show and cause notice to its six students, reported The News Minute. The administration alleged that these students were disrupting the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) inspection and violated the ‘rules and regulations’.

The said students informed the MCI officials about the lack of medical equipment and facilities in the college while they were on inspection.

What Happened?

The SR Medical College and Research Centre that is located in the Thiruvananthapuram district inducted its first batch in 2016 with 100 students. Soon after the classes commenced, the MCI conducted an inspection in which it found the college lacks the necessary infrastructure and facilities. Following this, the college was barred from further admitting students for the next two years.

According to the students, college showed no sign of improvement in the next two years. In November 2018, the students filed around 64 cases against the college in the Kerala High Court.

On June 4, 2019, the high court instructed the MCI to conduct another inspection within a period of the next 30 days to check whether the college has improved its facilities. On July 4, when the MCI started its inspection, students protested against the irregularities in the college.

When the team of MCI knocked the gates of the medical college, some students of the 2016 batch (the only batch) informed them about the lack of required medical equipment and facilities in the college. The students also revealed that because of the inspection the college has brought in outsiders in disguise of “patients”. A scuffle between the college facility and the students following the protests led to the cancelling of the inspection.

What Is In The Notice?

Following the cancellation of the inspection, the college handed over a show and cause notice to the six students who were protesting. In the notice, it was mentioned that six students were indulged in “activities continuously violating the discipline” and “creating chaos during the MCI inspection”. The notice also pointed out that the students were recording videos inside the campus without any permission.

A group of students in a Facebook page – ‘Stand With Students of SR Medical College’ posted videos of alleged fake patients brought in the hospital. In the videos, it can be seen empty wards and hospitals which were crowded on the day of MCI visit.
