Kerala Environmentalist Walks 100 Km In 24 Hrs Covered In Plastic To Create Awareness On Littering

To create awareness on plastic usage, a Kerala man walked 100Km in 24 hours, on Wednesday, October 2, donning plastic garbage and holding a placard that read, “Don’t throw waste in public places.” 

Deepak Varma from Palakkad district collected the plastic garbage littered on the roads and tied it all over his body in the form of a robe. The plastic robe contained: chips packet, shampoo bottles and plastic containers, among other plastic articles. 

Varma is an environmentalist and a resource person for Palakkad district Suchitwa Mission. He finished a walk from Palakkad to Ernakulam district carrying 35 kilograms of plastic waste fastened to his body.

He started his walk along with two volunteers on October 1, 8 am, from Victoria College Palakkad and within 24 hours, they concluded their walk at Ernakulam Durbar Hall ground. Speaking to The News Minute, Varma said, “The walk was to create awareness among the public, to not throw plastic waste in public places.”

Varma further added, “for this walk, I initially selected 1,400 plastic items that we use on a daily basis, around 700 plastic covers and 700 different types of plastic bottles. Among them, we selected 600 low-weight items and stitched it to my cloth,” the report quoted Varma as saying.

Varma also said that his team was able to build a network in all districts of Kerala. His garner immense support from the public and the civic bodies. Varma aims to spread his campaigns across the country.
