In a heart-warming incident, a Member of Parliament (MP) of Kenya travelled to the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra just to repay Rs 200 that he had borrowed from a grocer 23 years ago.
Richard Nyagaka Tongi, the lawmaker from the Nyaribari Chache constituency in Kenya, met the grocer Kashinath Gawli recently and it was all emotional. Gawli was overwhelmed with the fact that Tongi remembered him.
Tongi was a management student at Maulana Azad College from 1985-89 in Aurangabad. Gawli used to provide food to Tongi on a daily basis. After finishing college, when Tongi returned to his native country, he had an outstanding debt of Rs 200 with Gawli. Back then, Gawli had a grocery store in the Wankhedenagar locality, where Tongi used to stay.
Going down the memory lane, Tongi told the reporters, “I had a debt from 23 years ago that I had not paid, they had given me food, but I had not paid.” He said that after he returned to his country and got married, he took a vow to return to India one day and pay him back. He further said that now as he have repaid the money, his heart is at “peace”.
Tongi visited Aurangabad with his wife Michelle. He said that the journey to Aurangabad was an emotional one.

The MP, remembering his old days, said that as a student in Aurangabad, he was at the ‘lowest point’ in life. He said that it was during this struggling phase Gawli helped him. He said, “I want to say thank you. This is so emotional for me.”
He also praised the Gawli and his children. The MP expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the family after meeting them. He said the family of Gawli was “wonderful”.
He told reporters that the family insisted on taking him and his wife to a restaurant for a meal. However, he wanted to eat at their place. The Kenyan politician also interacted with the students of his college.
Before leaving Aurangabad, the MP requested Gawli to visit Kenya soon.
