MP: Teenager Kills Sister For Marrying In Different Caste; Another Couple Thrashed

Supported by

On June 22, a teenage boy in a village in Indore shot dead his 21 year old sister, Bulbul, for marrying a man, Kuldeep, from another caste.

Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ramkumar Rai told news agency PTI that six months ago, the woman married a man from a different caste against her family’s wishes. Both the Kuldeep and the deceased were residents of Rawad village.

Two Recent Incidents

“The couple had moved out of the village after their marriage but returned to the victim’s marital home on Saturday. The victim’s 17-year-old brother shot her in the head at her husband’s home,” Hindustan Times quoted Rai as saying.

While the accused surrendered at Betma police station, Bulbul was declared dead upon being brought to Indore Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH).

In another harrowing incident, a tribal couple in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district was allegedly subjected to torture in full public view by a kangaroo court on June 16. The couple, who belonged to two different tribal clans, were tied to wooden poles and thrashed before the villagers for as long as two hours.

While a case has been registered against four people, one of them has been arrested. “We’ve booked four men identified to be involved in the incident under Sections 341, 342, 323 and 34 of the IPC and one of the accused has been arrested,” NewsClick quoted Alirajpur superintendent of police, Vipul Srivastava, as saying.

Alirajpur is a tribal-dominated district having 75 % tribal population. It is one of the most backward districts of the country.

The tribal elders subsequently made the families reach a compromise, with the man’s family agreeing to paper to pay Rs 90,000 and provide two male goats as ‘love penalty.

The Ambua police station themselves registered a case against the perpetrators when the girl and her family refused to do it.

No ‘Honour’ In Killing

The torture and murder of young couples for being ‘guilty’ of falling in love with people from a different caste is an ugly reality in India. When it comes to family ‘honour’, a lot of people do not think twice before killing their own family members.

A newly-wed inter-caste couple was set on fire by the bride’s relatives, in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, on May 1. The woman, who was two months pregnant, died in the hospital, while the husband sustained severe burn injuries.

In December 2018, a 22-year-old woman from Telangana was allegedly killed by her parents for marrying a man from another caste. The incident happened Kalamadugu in Dandepalli Mandal areas of Mancherial district, Telangana, about 250 km away from Hyderabad.

In March 2018, Rajan, a man from Kerala, chased his 21-year-old daughter Athira into a neighbour’s house and stabbed her to death.

National Crime Records Bureau statistics reveal that horror killings in India have grown by around 796 per cent from 2014 to 2015. The highest number of such murders were recorded from, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Over 300 cases of horror killings were reported between 2016 and 2018.

Families often consider young men and women as the torchbearers of family ‘honour’ and when they fail to live up to expectations, there is often a great disappointment. However, to go to the extent of punishing someone for marrying a partner of their choice is unacceptable. Let’s remember, there is no ‘honour’ in killing.
