Indian Railways Promises To Offer 4 Lakh Additional Berths Per Day Soon

Indian Railways to provide 4 lakh additional berths per day from October with the help of a new technology that will replace the power generation car, reported The Financial Express.

As of now, trains with (Linke Hofmann Busch) LHB Coaches were equipped with one or two additional power generation cars, also known as End on Generation (EOG), that powered the train coaches for lighting, fan, and air conditioning.



What Is This New Technology?

The Indian Railways will introduce the new technology, which is already in use worldwide, called “Head on Generation” (HOG). Under this new technology, the train rakes will no longer require power generation cars, as the power supply will be tapped from overhead high tension power lines. At present, only train engines were able to tap electricity from overhead power wires through a device called pantograph.

Generally, there are two power generator cars. However, adopting this technology will remove one power generator car, which can be exchanged with a coach, increasing the number of berth without increasing the length of the train.

A senior railway official on anonymity told Financial Express Online that by Gandhi Jayanti, this year, almost all LHB coaches will be fitted with Head On Generation technology, which will help railway reducing carbon emission by 700Mt, and around ₹ 1.7 crore per year for 270 Kilo litres per year in each train.


Save around ₹6,000 Crore plus generate additional revenue 

As per a PTI report, It says Indian Railways will save around ₹ 6,000 crore in fuel bills annually, by adopting the new HOG technology, and by this year, over 5,000 railway coaches will be modified to comply with new HOG technology.

The rail coaches will not directly tap electricity from overhead tension will, it will accept power tapped by rail engines.

The diesel generator inside the power car, use around 40 litre of diesel for a non-AC coach while 65 to 70 litre Diesel for an AC coach per hour, One litre of diesel produces around three units of electricity, so a non-AC coach and an AC coach, uses nearly 120 units and 210 units of electricity per hour, respectively
