Hindu Mahasabha stirred controversy as they demanded Nathuram Godse’s court proceeding and his justification given to the judge for assassinating Mahatma Gandhi to be a part of the school curriculum in Madhya-Pradesh.
The Hindu Mahasabha in Gwalior observed the 70th Sacrifice Day on November 15, Friday, as the death anniversary of Godse and Narayan Apte, where the Chief Guest of the event, Kailash Narayan Sharma, hailed Godse for killing Mahatma Gandhi.
The group performed aarti of Godse and Narayan Apte, the two conspirators who were responsible for Gandhi’s assassination and were hanged for the act.
“Godse had eliminated Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as he was responsible for the partition of the country which had led to the massacre of lakhs of Hindus,” Sharma told the media.
The right-wing organisation mentioned their demands in a memorandum written to the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. From incorporating Godse’s justification for killing Gandhi in the school curriculum to seeking the return of Godse’s idol which was seized by the police in 2017 after their failed attempt to convert the office into Godse temple, the memorandum mentions other demands of Hindu Mahasabha.
“We also submitted a memorandum, addressed to MP Chief Minister, to the district administration. We have demanded inclusion of Godse’s statements, recorded during his trial, in the school curriculum,” Bharadwaj said.
Hindu Mahasabha national vice-president Jaiveer Bharadwaj said that he sees the assassination of Gandhi was as a contribution to India’s freedom struggle and a “brave act”.
Bharadwaj also warned the government not to harass the Hindu Mahasabha members over their beliefs and practices. “According to the constitution of India, anybody can perform any pooja at his private place. If they take any action against us and harass our members, we will move to the court. We will also hold a protest against Congress across the nation,” he said.
The ruling Congress in Madhya Pradesh condemned Friday’s event.
“The event glorified violence. This is condemnable. These people don’t believe in the Indian Constitution as Godse himself had filed a mercy petition before the British Queen despite the country having a Supreme Court,” said Bhupendra Gupta, vice president of state Congress Media Cell, News18 reported.
The right-wing organisation reportedly went on circulating pamphlets containing objectionable words about Mahatma Gandhi. Gwalior police have lodged an FIR against the distribution of such provocative pamphlets on Saturday. No arrests have been made thus far.
