Six Elephants Die Trying To Save Each Other At ‘Hell’s Waterfall’ In Thailand

Brotherhood, fraternity, love for all, compassion, selflessness and every other related virtue are often talked with respect to humans. It’s mostly just a very inspirational topic of discussion. But have you ever heard of elephants showing the same qualities?

Six elephants of a herd in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand on Saturday, October 5, were crossing a river when a baby elephant slipped and fell into the Haew Narok Waterfall, translated as Hell’s fall.

The waterfall gets its name as events like these are common around the waterfall as per the authorities.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation stated how the event was brought to notice around 3 am local time when a large number of elephants seemed to be blocking the road near the waterfall. The reason wasn’t clear until a three-year-old elephant’s body was found nearby with five bodies of adult elephants.

It was a herd of eight and the other two have been rescued. The Wildlife Friends Foundation expressed concern over the survival of the two as they’ve lost their entire family. The emotional impact is what worried authorities following which the park remains closed as of now. “It’s like losing half your family,” Edwin Wiek, the founder of Wildlife Friends Foundation told the BBC. “There’s nothing you can do, it’s nature, unfortunately,” he said. Around 7,000 Asian elephants remain in Thailand, with more than half living in captivity.

While the Environment Minister released statements about how happenings like these are unfortunate yet common, the news has taken the world by storm.
