The Paryaya Palimar Mutt has put an end to the practice of Ede Snana at the Subrahmanya shrine Sri Krishna Mutt Temple premises. In Ede Snana, devotees roll over food that is offered to the lord. The demand to end this ritual came on December 13, during the Subrahmanya Shasthi celebrations.

Two years ago Ede Snana replaced the practice of the Made Snana, reported The News Minute. In Made Snana devotees who were at the bottom of the caste hierarchy rolled over plantain leaves in which Brahmins have consumed food.

To avoid controversy, practice of Ede Snana banned

Sri Vidyadhessha Teertha Swamiji of Paryaya Sri Palimar Mutt asked the devotees not to practice Made Snana and go forward with the practice of Ede Snana. The Hindu reported that after two years, witnessing several controversies surrounding the particular ritual and the media glare, he decided to call it off. He stated that this decision was taken to avoid unnecessary controversies. According to The Star of Mysore, he said, “Such rituals can be done away with for public.” Vishwesha Theertha said that neither ‘Made Snana’ nor ‘Ede Snana’ is inevitable for the religion. ‘’I welcome the decision of Palimar seer’’ he said. Vishwesha Theertha said that neither ‘Made Snana’ nor ‘Ede Snana’ is inevitable for the religion. “I welcome the decision of Palimar seer’’ he said.

On the other hand, he said that the prasadam will be served to the pilgrims who came to the temple at the dining hall in the Sri Krishna Mutt Temple. Prayers were chanted to mark the start of the Subramanya Shasti festival. On Thursday, the New Indian Express reported that around four people performed the ritual of Urulu Seve. In Urulu Seve, worshipers roll in front of the Subrahmanya Gudi.

Nonetheless, even after the decision was announced, around 300 devotees performed the Ede Snana ritual at the Kukke Subrahmanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district on December 16.

Made Snana was Called Off as it Violates Human Dignity

Made Snana became a topic of debate in the last few years. Several devotees believed that the ritual can cure skin diseases and other disorders whereas others opposed it. In 2017, the Karnataka Prevention and Eradication Inhuman Evil Practices and Black Magic Bill banned Made Snana on the basis of human dignity violation.
