Delhi: Man With Chest Pain Allegedly Sent By Hospital To Buy Medicine, Dies Of Stroke In Queue

The family of former TV journalist Deepanshu Dubey filed an FIR against Delhi government’s Hedgewar Hospital for alleged medical negligence after Dubey was sent to buy his own medicines even while he was suffering from a heart attack. He died while waiting for his turn to buy his medicines in a queue at the pharmacy. After suffering from acute chest pains on Friday, October 5, Dubey rushed himself to the nearest hospital’s emergency room. He asked his friend to meet him at the hospital.

What had happened?

After an initial examination, Dubey, who was already severely sick, was asked to go and buy his own medicines from the pharmacy, where he collapsed while standing in a queue, said a report by DNA. He reportedly suffered a stroke while standing in the queue and died while waiting for his turn.

Dubey is survived by his parents, sister and a widow. His family will reportedly approach the Delhi Medical Council to take a look into the matter and has filed an FIR against the hospital, for medical negligence which took the life of their only bread-earning member.

Dubey’s friend Anjuman Gusain is in a state of shock and said that as soon as Dubey called him, he rushed to the hospital within 30 minutes because he was already aware of his heart condition, and there he saw three or four doctors pumping his friend’s chest, huddled over him, reported Free Press Journal“Some people at the spot, including a cop, told me that he fell while standing in the queue of the pharmacy. That’s when I realised what had happened. How could the hospital staff ask a patient to go and buy his own medicines? We had been friends for many years now, working in the same field. It is like I lost my brother,” Gusain said.

Dr Sushil Kumar, the hospital medical superintendent, was unavailable for comment. Dubey was a resident of Kanpur and was living in Delhi for more than a decade. He was working with different news channels as a news anchor and had recently turned an entrepreneur as he started his own news portal. Last year, Dubey had to be rushed to a private hospital and given an injection when he suffered a similar heart attack. Dubey’s cousins have been in Delhi filing an FIR against the hospital while his last rites were performed in his hometown in Kanpur, where his body arrived on Saturday.

Medical negligence like these is wholly unacceptable. The Logical Indian community urges the authorities to look into the matter and take stringent action against those who will be found guilty.
