Nothing could be more shameful than a soldier losing his life at hands of his own countrymen. On the eve of 69th independence day, LANCE NAIK Vedmitra Chaudhary deployed with 416 Engineering Brigade Camp in Meerut, had gone to milk booth on Rohta Road in Hardevnagar where he took on the goons teasing the daughter of the owner.
As per the police reports, he beat up one of the eve-teasers – Akash Saini. Enraged, Akash called his friends, who arrived at the spot armed with sticks. They assaulted the jawan, leaving him grievously injured. The jawan survived by his wife, son and a daughter breathed his last at an army hospital. As per the witnesses, more than 100 onlookers witnessed the crime but did not dare to move an inch to save the jawan.
All the accused of the case have been arrested and will be tried under the stringent National Security Act (NSA)
Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the jawan.
The chief of army staff, Gen Dalbir Singh and the jawan’s colleagues expressed heartfelt condolences to the grief-stricken family. Talking about the incident, Sub-Area Colonel Rajiv Kumar said, Chaudhury fulfilled the duty of an Indian citizen and protected a girl’s honour. He will be remembered as a martyr.
