Wife Of Cop Killed In Bulandshahr: ‘It Was Planned Lynching, Colleagues Refused To Take Case Ahead’

Given the current temperature in the country, to have patience and faith in the system of justice is a tough ask. However, Rajini Singh, the wife of Subodh Singh – who was killed by a mob outside a Bulandshahr police station in December 2018 – continues to fight for bringing justice to her husband’s memory.

Stationed in Bulandshahr at the time, Singh was killed by a mob after protests in the city turned violent last year.

Speaking to The Hindu, Rajini Singh said, “The society he gave up his life for, has not given him anything in return. The main accused was granted bail.”

She called his murder ‘a planned lynching’ and informed that her husband’s colleagues and other officers refused to take her case forward.

This year, Yogesh Raj, the leader of the local Bajrang Dal unit, and Shikhar Agarwal, former president of the BJP’s youth wing in Bulandshahr,  who were the alleged conspirators for instigating violence, along with several others, were granted bail by the Allahabad High Court, and the U.P. government is yet to file an appeal against the order.

Ms. Singh told The Hindu that she has filed a Special Leave Petition through senior advocate Sanjay Hegde in the Supreme Court for cancellation of the bail of Yogesh Raj and the case was scheduled to be heard on December 6.

Ms. Singh suspects that there is a link between her husband’s killing and him being the first investigating officer in the Akhlaq lynching case of 2015 when he was posted in Dadri.

“I have been told that close relatives of those who were chargesheeted in the Akhlaq lynching case live in Syana,” she said.

The thing that hurt her the most was the response of society. “A police officer is neither a Hindu nor a Muslim. He is expected to uphold the rule of law. The way a communal narrative is being built around the case and the accused who got bail were welcomed show that my husband was wrong in believing that he was defending his own people,” she told The Hindu.

The fact that a temple has been built in the memory of Sumit Dalal who was throwing stones moments before he was killed by a stray bullet is symbolic of how corroded the matter is.
