BJP MLA Om Prakash Sharma was suspended from the Delhi Assembly yesterday for two days for making derogatory remarks against AAP MLA Alka Lamba.

As per the reports by Business Standard; the browl started when the issue of 402 deaths of homeless people was raised by Om Prakash. He alleged that the numbers were too less about 221 last year and increase is due to negligence by AAP Govt. On this Alka Lamba highlighted the issue of the drug abuse in the worst affected area stating deaths were not due to cold but due to “use of drugs”.

On this Om Prakash allegedly made a derogatory remark ‘raat bhar ghumne wali’ (who roams about at night) against Alka Lamba, which led to disruption of House proceedings as the AAP MLAs started protested against Om Prakash.

The protest was so strong that speaker Ram Niwas Goel was forced to adjourn the House twice and finally took the call and suspended Om Prakash for two days.  Sharma has been suspended till Thursday.

AAP’s women legislators has denounced the comment and asked for permanent suspension and apology from the BJP MLA or Opposition leader Vijendra Gupta.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed his shock over the comments and hoped BJP would take action against him.

“Am shocked at language used by O P Sharma, BJP MLA, against a lady MLA. 2 days back also, he abused a lady MLA. Hope BJP will act against him (sic),” Kejriwal tweeted.

BJP’s Gupta alleged that AAP MLA Amanatullah and Lamba tried to slap him and Sharma, which the Speaker termed as “baseless”.

“Two days back, Sharma also used derogatory remarks against Lamba on a news channel and thereafter, women MLAs complained to me against the BJP MLA. Today as well, he used bad language against Lamba. In August this year, the same BJP MLA called Alka Lamba a “drug addict” as she initiated an anti-drug drive.” the Speaker told to the PTI reporter.

These kind of uproars are common in the house in any state or even the centre, however making such derogatory remarks on any woman is not acceptable, especially by the law makers who are supposed to be the leaders we should follow.

We hope for a fair investigation of this issue and action against the guilty party, so that smooth uninterrupted proceeding can be made in the House which costs a lot to the taxpayers.
