About 33 people have died and over one lakh displaced due to incessant rainfall over the last four days. Over 25 lakh people have been affected in nine flood-affected districts in Bihar, according to disaster management officials. The nine affected districts include Araria, Kishanganj, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur.
The death toll in the Bihar floods mounted with 25.66 lakh people reeling from the deluge in 12 districts of the state following incessant rains in Nepal.
The maximum number of people have lost their lives in Araria district followed by Sitamarhi.
According to a report by the Disaster Management Department, five rivers – Bagmati, Kamla Balan, Kosi and Gandak – are flowing above the danger level in the state. The rivers are overflowing due to torrential rainfall in the catchment areas bordering Nepal.
Currently, thousands of people are living in camps and eating at community kitchens being accommodated by the government.
Due to increased water pressure on banks of Kosi in Supaul, nearly four lakh cusecs water was discharged from the barrage on July 14 morning, leading to floods in Supaul, Kisanpur, Marouna and Nirmali. Earlier on Saturday evening, all 56 gates of Birpur barrage were raised following incessant rainfall. For similar reasons, additional water was discharged from Gandak and Bagmati rivers.
On the other hand, the overflowing Bagmati river has caused floods in over 200 villages of Sitamarhi and Sheohar in North Bihar. Besides Bagmati, Kamala Balan and Lakhandei rivers are also flowing above danger marks.
In flood-affected districts, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to carry out the relief and rescue operation.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following a high-level meeting in relation to rescue and relief operations conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected district on Sunday.
District Magistrate Baidyanath Yadav has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of all the deceased, reported ZEE News.
