Bengaluru traffic police on Tuesday, December 3, posed as passengers to find autorickshaw drivers that refused to abide by rules and regulations.

The police posed as passengers in prime junctions in three zones in the city. The drivers were fined for denying rides, refusing to go by metered fares, and charging more than the metered fare at the destination. In total, the traffic police collected over 8 lakh in fines.

“Police personnel, including women, in mufti were deployed at important junctions in the three traffic divisions. They were told to flag down auto drivers and take rides in the city. Cases were booked against drivers who behaved rudely,” BR Ravikanthe Gowda, Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic), was quoted in Udayavani.

According to The News Minute report, more than 5,200 auto drivers were fined by the police. In the East zone, 797 auto drivers refused rides. While 697 drivers denied rides in the West Zone, the number was 81 in the North zone. Also, 682 drivers in the East Zone,  604 in the West and 60 in the North zone demanded an extra fare. The police also seized 212 autos from the East Zone and 280 from the West zone for having no or improper documents.

The police also fined around 2000 auto drivers for minor offences like not wearing a uniform.

“Only two out of 10 auto drivers will agree to go to a distance of more than 4-5 km as per metre. This is the complaint we keep on getting from the public as well,” a traffic constable working in Chickpet Police Station in the West Zone was quoted by the media.
