Over 2,000 J&K Youth Turn Up For First Army Recruitment After Scrapping Of Article 370

The Jammu and Kashmir youth came out in huge numbers for the Indian army’s first recruitment rally post abrogation of Article 370, in Srinagar on October 3.

Army officials said it was a Unit Headquarters Quota (UHQ) rally meant for blood relations of serving/retired soldiers. While comparing the latest turn out with to previous ones, a senior army officer said that this time more than 2,000 people participated in the rally. Around 1,200 people participated in the recruitment drive last time.

The recruitment process comes at a time when Pakistan continues to violate ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC). The recruitment drive was organised for the Indian Army’s Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry regiment. According to an Army statement, two-day recruitment is to create opportunities for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. “The aspirants displayed true grit and determination to prove their mettle for securing a chance to serve the nation,” the statement added.

The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry was started in 1947. Since then army personnel have many participated in many wars, including the Sino-India War of 1962. In 1984 this unit was deployed to the Siachen Glacier as part of Operation Meghdoot.

All the candidate said that they are willing to serve the nation on the fence and are ready to tackle any situation. “I questioned myself and figured that I should be in the army. Since morning, I have passed several tests and feel I will qualify other too,” said Mir Sartaj from Kokarnag area of south Kashmir to media.
