AMU Professor Booked For ‘Promoting Enmity’ After Criticizing Communication Blackout In Kashmir

Uttar Pradesh Police have lodged an FIR against the Aligarh Muslim University professor and Kashmir journalist, Huma Parveen, 34, and her husband for allegedly hurting the morale of the security forces in Kashmir, PTI reported on Wednesday.

The FIR cited an “inappropriate post” in which the assistant professor compared communication blackout in Kashmir to connection lost with the Chandrayaan immediately after the abrogation of Article 370. The reference was made to ISRO’s mission that failed in September with lander Vikram losing contact after getting smashed on the moon’s surface.

“Sach mein sampark toot jana kitna khatarnak aur dukhad hota hai, chahe Chandrayaan ho ya Kashmir,” the post said on the “pain” caused by losing contact, “whether it is Chandrayaan or Kashmir”.

Parveen, who is faculty of AMU’S Mass Communication Department has been booked on charges relating to promoting enmity between different groups.

Both husband and wife were booked on November 14 following the complaint lodged by Hindu Mahasabha spokesperson Ashok Pandey over month old post. Pandey also alleged that the posts shared by Parveen on her facebook wall were “objectionable”, and some of them implied “taunt to the Indian Prime Minister”. However, the police are yet to come across such post to support this charge.

Considering the post as a threat to the nation’s integrity, FIR was lodged at the Gandhi Park police station.

When contacted on Wednesday, Huma Parveen told News18, “I have not written a single post myself but have just shared a few posts published either in leading news portals or by some friends.”

She further justified her stance by saying that she is a loyal citizen of the country and none of her shared posts even remotely suggest that she does not consider Kashmir an integral part of India.

According to the professor, she shared these posts with her husband Naeem Shaukat, as she lost connection with him after Jammu-Kashmir was put in complete communication shutdown.

Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhari said the matter is being investigated.
