Agra To Be Renamed As Agravan? UP Govt Mulls Name Change

Supported by

The Yogi Aditynath led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh is now mulling over changing the name of Agra to Agravan, India Today reported.

After changing the names of Allahabad to Prayagraj and Mughalsarai to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Nagar, the state government has asked the Ambedkar University in Agra to look into the historical aspect of the city’s name. The history depart of the university is now looking at the proposal.

Those who want the city to be named as ‘Agravan’ have been placing their argument in support of it since long but many others call Agra as Akbarabad after Emperor Akbar, who made it the capital of the Mughal Empire.

According to media reports, the move to change the name of Agra to Agravan is because Agra was earlier known as Agravan. Historians and experts have been asked to look into the circumstances and time when Agravan’s name was changed to Agra.

Late BJP MLA Jagan Prasad Garg had written a letter to Adityanath, requesting him to change the name of Agra to Agravan. Tourism trade experts, however, said that the name change will lead to a lot of confusion internationally, as scores of foreigners come to Agra to see Taj Mahal. “Agra is known worldwide as the city of Taj Mahal and a change of name would not go down well,” Rakesh Tiwari, a travel and tour operator told the media.
