In Bihar, Abandoning Elderly Parents Can Land Children In Jail As Cabinet Approves Proposal

In a bid to help the elderly, the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar cabinet on Tuesday (11 June 2019) gave approval to a proposal that seeks jail terms for those sons or daughters who go on to abandon their elderly parents.

The proposal by Bihar social welfare department has provisions for punishments as severe as imprisonment if wards do not look after their parents properly in their old age. 

According to the proposal, the cases against the wards will be registered under non-bailable section after the parents put up any such complaint.

Other decisions that were taken by the cabinet

Cabinets in the meeting took 16 other important agendas up for discussion and took 15 decisions in total. Of all, one of the important decision was to award government jobs to dependants of martyrs of Pulwama and Kupwara attack, it was decided that jobs will be awarded to the family of martyrs who belonged to the state.  

Ratan Kumar Thakur from Bhagalpur district, Sanjay Kumar Sinha from Patna and Pintu Kumar Singh from Begusarai were among those martyred in the two incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. The Bihar government will offer these martyrs’ dependents a job in Class III and IV category, subject to their individual qualifications.

The Bihar cabinet also sanctioned a budget of Rs. 11.68 Crores for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of a multi-purpose 130 MW Dagmara hydel power project in Supaul district of the state.
