India’s largest taxpayers, including multinational corporations and foreign institutional investors, are poised to transition to fully automated tax compliance systems.
Details have emerged regarding the central government’s plan to open Application Programming Interface (API) access for its direct tax and customs portals. This move follows the successful implementation of similar access for Goods and Services Tax (GST) systems.
By allowing third party technology providers to integrate directly with government databases, the initiative seeks to eliminate manual tracking of filings and appeals. This digital shift aims to reduce human error and litigation risks while positioning India as a leader in technology led tax governance.
Compliance Landscape
The move toward automation comes as a proactive response to the operational hurdles faced by large companies that currently navigate a fragmented tax ecosystem. Presently, tax teams must manually monitor multiple government portals to track income tax notices, GST filings, and customs litigation.
While return filings have transitioned online over the last decade, high stakes processes like tracking status updates from the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal still require repetitive manual checks.
By granting API access, the government enables a seamless flow of data where status updates and government notices can be pulled directly into a company’s internal accounting software in real time.
Technology Integration
Industry leaders have welcomed the development, noting that API access is a critical enabler for Artificial Intelligence driven compliance tools. Prashanth Agarwal, a partner in tax technology at PwC India, stated that the integration would allow for real time controls and faster validation of PAN and customs data.
This technical overhaul aligns with the broader vision shared by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Agrawal.
In a recent message, Agrawal emphasised that the department’s role is evolving toward facilitation and trust. He noted that as the new tax reforms take effect, familiarity with automated processes will be essential for a transparent and service oriented tax administration.
Customs & GST Synergy
The expansion of API access to the customs department is expected to be particularly transformative for import export focused businesses. Historically, customs compliance has suffered from limited integration with GST systems, leading to reconciliation delays.
With the new automated framework, taxpayers can retrieve bills of entry and validate customs data in tandem with their GST returns, ensuring near touchless compliance. Furthermore, on the GST front, existing APIs already allow companies to monitor the MSME status of their vendors automatically.
This ensures that large firms can strictly adhere to special provisions, such as the mandatory 45 day payment cycle for MSME dues, without manual oversight.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that simplifying regulatory burdens is a vital step toward a more efficient and transparent nation. Moving away from a culture of manual oversight and complex paperwork encourages voluntary compliance and fosters a spirit of trust between the state and its citizens.
However, as we embrace this digital transformation, it is imperative that the government maintains the highest standards of cybersecurity and data protection.
Technological progress should always be human centric, ensuring that while large corporations benefit from speed, the underlying system remains fair, empathetic, and inclusive for all. True progress lies in creating a digital architecture that reduces anxiety and promotes a harmonious relationship between taxpayers and the law.
