A 20-year-old woman from Kolkata was allegedly abducted from her home by two friends, Chandan Mallick and Debangshu Biswas, on pretext of her birthday party. The accused took her to a flat near Malancha, where she was reportedly drugged, abducted, and gang-raped multiple times.

The woman escaped the following morning, informed her family, and filed a police complaint. The accused remain at large, and police have launched a manhunt while continuing their investigation.

The Incident and Police Response

The incident took place on the night of Friday, September 5, 2025, in the Haridevpur area of South Kolkata. The victim, a 20-year-old college student who also works part-time, was invited by her acquaintance Chandan Mallick to a birthday party. Upon reaching a flat in Regent Colony near Malancha, she found only two men present: Chandan and Debangshu Biswas, who is reportedly a government employee.

The victim alleged that after having a meal, she was forcibly confined by the accused, who locked the doors and repeatedly sexually assaulted her after allegedly spiking her drink. The woman managed to escape at around 10:30 am the next day and immediately reported the ordeal to her family and police.

Police have registered an FIR under various sections including kidnapping, rape, wrongful confinement, and stalking. Senior police officials confirmed the ongoing investigation and assured priority to the victim’s safety and swift justice.

Background and Investigation Details

Initial reports indicate that the accused had been in regular contact with the victim for several months, during which they promised to involve her in social activities linked to a local Durga Puja committee. This relationship reportedly helped build the victim’s trust, which the perpetrators exploited.

The accused have fled since the incident, prompting a police manhunt. Neighbours of the accused confirmed their identities and revealed some background, including that Biswas lost his father, was employed in a government position, and lived with his mother.

Police have been collecting CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the crime scene while appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the suspects’ capture. This case has again raised concerns about women’s safety in Kolkata, a city often considered relatively safe but now witnessing a worrisome rise in such incidents.

Not an Isolated Case

Kolkata has witnessed a series of disturbing crimes against women recently. Notably, a law student was allegedly gang-raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus in June 2025, while last year a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College.

These incidents have sparked protests and raised urgent concerns about women’s safety in the city.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This horrific case is a stark reminder of the continuing dangers women face from those they may know and trust, underscoring the urgent need for societal transformation. Respect for consent, women’s autonomy, and personal safety must be non-negotiable pillars of every community.

Beyond ensuring swift legal action and justice for survivors, it is imperative that families, educational institutions, and community leaders actively foster environments rooted in empathy, accountability, and mutual respect. Kolkata’s growing number of such cases calls for systemic reforms and cultural introspection, emphasising kindness and coexistence.
