At least 19 people have died and 25 others have been injured after a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, October 17. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced compensation of ₹25 lakh and a government job for the family of each deceased person, along with ₹5 lakh and full medical expenses for every injured person.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has cancelled his scheduled engagements in the state and is expected to visit the injured. Police have detained 12 people for questioning, including individuals associated with the puja committee and security arrangements. Authorities have launched an investigation, imposed prohibitory orders in parts of Bowbazar and directed several major pandals to temporarily restrict or suspend visitor entry following the tragedy. Police have also arrested the organisers among 7 of the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata following the stampede.
What Led To The Tragedy?
The incident occurred at around 7.30 pm on Saturday during Maha Saptami celebrations, when a large number of devotees gathered at the popular Chorbagan pandal. According to preliminary accounts, heavy rainfall prompted visitors waiting outside to move towards the entrance for shelter, triggering a sudden surge in the already crowded area.
The narrow lanes around the venue reportedly made it difficult for people to move freely, contributing to the chaos. Officials are also examining whether an announcement by the organisers and confusion over crowd movement contributed to the incident. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation, and the causes should not be treated as conclusively established.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the injured at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and expressed grief over the loss of lives. He said 19 people had died, including 17 at the scene, while 25 others had been injured. Reports indicated that most of the injured were out of danger, although at least one person was in critical condition. Emergency personnel and local residents helped rescue victims and transport them to hospitals.
Compensation And Investigation
The West Bengal government has announced ₹25 lakh in compensation and a Group D government job for one eligible family member of each deceased person. Every injured person will receive ₹5 lakh, and the state government has said it will bear the full cost of their medical treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has separately announced assistance of ₹2 lakh for the family of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for each injured person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Adhikari has promised action against anyone found responsible for negligence and said a fact-finding inquiry would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A Special Investigation Team has also been reported to be part of the probe, with judicial oversight being sought. Police have detained 12 people for questioning, including members associated with the puja committee and security personnel. Investigators are examining possible crowd-management failures, the arrangements at entry and exit points, and available CCTV footage. The Chorbagan pandal has been closed following the incident, while the organisers’ office-bearers have reportedly resigned. Separately, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in parts of Bowbazar from October 18 to October 20.
Authorities have also asked several major puja organisers, including those at Tala Pratyay, Alipore Sarbojanin, Chetla Agrani and Ballygunge Sarbojonin, to temporarily stop visitor entry. The show at Allen Park has also been cancelled. Amit Shah, who arrived in West Bengal for a two-day visit, cancelled his Sunday engagements and was expected to meet the injured. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief over the incident.
The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.

Police have arrested the organisers of the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata following the stampede that killed at least 19 people. Seven other people have also been arrested, while five others have been detained for questioning, according to The Indian Express. The police are investigating possible lapses in crowd management and safety arrangements. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, and authorities are examining CCTV footage to establish responsibility for the tragedy.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Durga Puja is a celebration of faith, community and togetherness, bringing people from different backgrounds into shared public spaces. The loss of lives at a festival meant to unite communities is deeply distressing and calls for accountability, transparency and compassion for the affected families. While compensation can provide some immediate financial support, it cannot undo the loss suffered by those who have lost loved ones.
The investigation must establish whether adequate crowd-control measures, trained volunteers, safe entry and exit routes, emergency medical support and coordination between organisers and police were in place. Any lapses must be addressed fairly, without allowing political blame to overshadow the need for answers.
Authorities and organisers across the country must treat public safety as a fundamental responsibility rather than an afterthought, particularly at events that attract large crowds. How can communities, festival organisers and authorities work together to ensure that celebrations remain safe, inclusive and joyful for everyone?
