From IAS Dream to Scientific Leadership: How Kerala’s Tessy Thomas Became India’s ‘Missile Woman of India’

Dr Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the “Missile Woman of India”, once aspired to become an IAS officer. Instead, her fascination with mathematics and science led her towards engineering and eventually to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where she joined in 1988.

Over the course of her career, she became the first woman scientist in India to head a major missile development project, leading the Agni-IV programme and serving as Project Director (Mission) for Agni-V. She later became Director General of Aeronautical Systems at DRDO.

Her journey, spanning more than three decades, also reflects India’s evolution in indigenous defence technology and the growing participation of women in science and engineering.

A Childhood Shaped Resilience

Thomas grew up in Kerala in a family of six children. When she was in Class VIII, her father, an accountant, suffered a paralytic stroke and remained confined to the house until his death.

Her mother, a teacher, continued raising the family and ensuring that the children received an education. Thomas has recalled that her father was particularly strong in mathematics and had a deep influence on her interest in the subject.

Science and mathematics fascinated Thomas from childhood. A visit to the rocket-launching station at Thumba further strengthened her interest in science and technology.

She went on to study electrical engineering at Government Engineering College, Thrissur, and later pursued an M.Tech in Guided Missiles at the Institute of Armament Technology in Pune. Although she had once considered the civil services and dreamed of becoming an IAS officer, an opportunity with DRDO ultimately changed the direction of her career.

From Engineer To Missile Scientist

Thomas joined DRDO in 1988, during a period when India was working to build critical defence technologies domestically amid international technology restrictions. The organisation was pursuing the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, which involved developing multiple missile systems and the technologies needed to support them.

Thomas began working in areas including guidance and navigation, gradually building expertise in systems that would become central to her later career.

She also worked alongside Dr APJ Abdul Kalam during the early years of her career. Thomas has credited the broader DRDO ecosystem with helping scientists learn technologies step by step from understanding systems and designing algorithms to development, production and testing. “We lacked the knowledge back in the 1980s when the technology was non-existent,” she said in 2023, describing how indigenous expertise was gradually developed.

Leading India’s Agni Programmes

In 2009, Thomas became Project Director for Agni-IV, overseeing the development of the ballistic missile and its associated technologies. The system was successfully flight-tested in 2011. She subsequently served as Project Director (Mission) for Agni-V, a long-range ballistic missile, which successfully completed its first flight test on 19 April 2012.

Her work focused on areas including guidance, navigation, control, mission design and trajectory simulation. These were not individual achievements carried out in isolation but part of large, multidisciplinary programmes involving teams of scientists and engineers.

Thomas’ leadership nevertheless marked an important milestone: she became the first woman scientist in India to head a major missile development project. She later rose to become Director General of Aeronautical Systems at DRDO.

Science Beyond Gender Barriers

Thomas’ career has often been presented through the lens of gender, given the significance of a woman leading major missile programmes.

Yet she has consistently offered a different perspective. In a 2012 interview, she said, “When I reach there for work, I am no more a woman. I am only a scientist.” In a July 2026 interview, she similarly emphasised that science has no gender and that capability, competence, knowledge and decision-making matter most.

Her experience also highlights how much the Indian defence-science ecosystem has changed. Thomas has recalled that women were very few in strategic scientific roles when she joined DRDO.

She has spoken about balancing demanding assignments with family responsibilities, while emphasising the importance of support systems and careful planning. Today, she advocates focused learning and strong technical knowledge for young people entering STEM careers.

Building A Scientific Legacy

Thomas’ legacy extends beyond her association with Agni-IV and Agni-V. During her tenure as Director General of Aeronautical Systems, she continued to work on strengthening India’s capabilities in advanced defence technologies.

DRDO describes indigenous development of systems such as the Agni and Prithvi missile series as part of its broader effort towards self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

In her recent reflections, Thomas has argued that India has built capabilities across areas ranging from materials and design to algorithms and avionics.

She has also stressed that the next generation must continue learning and applying scientific knowledge. Her own journey from a Kerala childhood and an IAS dream to decades of missile research and scientific leadership demonstrates how a career can take an unexpected turn when curiosity meets opportunity.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Tessy Thomas’ story is inspiring not simply because she became a woman leader in a field where women were once scarce, but because it shows what sustained education, mentorship and access to scientific opportunities can make possible.

Her refusal to view science through a gendered lens is equally significant: equality is not only about celebrating exceptional women after they break barriers, but about ensuring that more young people have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and confidence to lead.
