Malappuram municipality in Kerala is all geared up to become India’s first to offer free Wi-Fi connectivity to its entire population. The access to free high-speed Wi-Fi internet connectivity will span across its 33 sq km area.

All infrastructures are now in place and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the project soon. The project was partially funded by the State IT Department granting Rs.50 lakh and another Rs.95 lakh were raised by the Municipality itself, to meet initial costs.

Municipality has bigger plans once it kicks off. They plan to connect schools, buses, students and parents, moreover to empower education they may offer some free software and training as well.

However to restrict the misuse of the free internet there may be blocking of some sites and heavy downloading, like movies videos etc.

This is much-appreciated step by Malappuram municipality, Kerala is leading us to better and brighter future embedded in technology. May the other municipalities and states follow suit.
