In a disturbing case from Karnataka, police have arrested a man for allegedly murdering his close friend to steal ₹2.5 lakh and later spending part of the money on gifts for his estranged second wife. The accused, identified as Shafi from Birur in Chikkamagaluru district, allegedly lured his friend Puttaraju, a welder, to Tiptur taluk in Tumakuru district on February 19 under the pretext of attending a gold auction.
According to investigators, Shafi attacked him with a machete in a forested area near Honnavalli and fled with the cash. The victim’s body was discovered the following morning by a passerby, prompting a police investigation that eventually led to Shafi’s arrest in Chintamani. Police said the two men had been friends for nearly seven years, and further investigation into the motive and circumstances of the crime is ongoing.
Murder In A Remote Area
According to police officials, the incident unfolded after Shafi allegedly persuaded Puttaraju to accompany him to what he claimed was a gold auction organised by a finance company. Believing the story, Puttaraju reportedly left home around 11 am carrying about ₹2.5 lakh in cash, which he intended to use for the supposed auction. Investigators said Shafi took him on a motorcycle to a secluded forest stretch near Honnavalli in Tiptur taluk. There, he allegedly attacked Puttaraju with a machete in broad daylight, killing him before escaping with the money.
The victim’s body was discovered the next morning when a milk vendor travelling along the road noticed the body lying near the roadside and alerted authorities. Police from the Honnavalli station rushed to the spot and registered a murder case. During the investigation, officers analysed the victim’s recent movements and phone records, which eventually led them to identify Shafi as the primary suspect.
Arrest And Disturbing Motive Revealed
Police later tracked down and arrested the accused in Chintamani after piecing together the sequence of events. During interrogation, investigators reportedly discovered that after the alleged murder, Shafi met his estranged second wife at a lodge in Arasikere. Police sources said he gave her ₹60,000 in cash and purchased a new television using the stolen money in an attempt to reconcile with her.
Officials added that the accused and the victim had shared a close friendship for about seven years, which has left residents in the community shocked. Investigators are continuing to examine the financial and personal circumstances that may have led to the crime and are verifying whether others may have had knowledge of the incident. Authorities have stated that further details are expected as the probe progresses.
