A horrific incident has shaken Karnataka’s Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old homestay operator were allegedly gang-raped near Sanapur Lake on Thursday night. The attack occurred while the group, including three male tourists, was stargazing.

The assailants, who initially asked for directions and demanded money, allegedly turned violent when refused, pushing three men into a nearby canal. One of the men, Bibash from Odisha, was initially reported missing but his body was later recovered from the canal on Saturday. The police have registered a case under multiple sections, including gang rape and attempted murder, and are actively searching for the culprits.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded around 10:30 pm when the group of tourists, including the Israeli woman, three male companions from the United States, Odisha, and Maharashtra, and the homestay owner, were enjoying music and stargazing by the Tungabhadra canal. The attackers, who spoke Kannada and Telugu, initially asked for directions to a petrol pump but soon demanded Rs 100.

When the group refused, the situation allegedly escalated into violence. Two of the male tourists, Daniel from the US and Pankaj from Maharashtra, managed to escape with injuries, while the third, Bibash from Odisha, was initially reported missing but later found dead in the canal.

The two women are undergoing medical treatment at a government hospital. Koppal Superintendent of Police Ram L Arasiddi confirmed that six special teams have been formed to track down the accused.

Background and Aftermath

Hampi is generally considered a safe destination, known for its low crime rate and welcoming locals. However, this incident has intensified concerns over tourist safety, prompting local activists and residents to demand enhanced security measures. The police have registered a case under sections related to extortion, robbery, alleged gang rape, and attempted murder.

The investigation is ongoing, with officials assuring swift action against the perpetrators. The recovery of Bibash’s body has added to the gravity of the situation, highlighting the need for immediate and effective measures to ensure safety in tourist areas.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures and community vigilance in tourist destinations. It also highlights the importance of fostering a culture of respect and empathy towards all individuals, regardless of their nationality or background.

As we condemn such acts of violence, we must also reflect on how we can collectively work towards creating safer and more inclusive environments. How can we, as a society, ensure that our tourist spots remain safe for everyone, and what role can community engagement play in preventing such incidents?
