Santosh Patayat (33) was arrested by the Gokak Rural Police in Karnataka’s Belagavi district for allegedly murdering his 32-year-old wife, Sakkubai Patayat, to continue a clandestine relationship with a widow from his village. The incident took place during a return journey from the Chamundeshwari Temple in Marakumbi village, where Santosh had lured his wife under the religious pretext of Adhika Masa.
After allegedly poisoning and strangling her, Santosh staged a motorcycle accident to mislead authorities and family members. However, sharp forensic scrutiny and rigorous police interrogation forced a full confession. The victim’s family is devastated, demanding strict justice, while law enforcement officials have registered a formal murder case and remanded the accused into custody as further judicial proceedings commence.
The Backdrop: A Fractured Marriage and an Extramarital Affair
Santosh Patayat, a resident of Shindikurabet village in the Gokak taluk of Belagavi, had been married to Sakkubai for nine years. However, beneath the surface of domestic life, a deep rift had formed. For four years, Santosh had secretly entered into an intense extramarital relationship with a widow living in the same village.
As the affair progressed, Santosh began viewing his wife not just with estrangement, but as a permanent obstacle to the future he envisioned with his lover. Driven by the desire to permanently continue his relationship without marital interference, Santosh began plotting to eliminate Sakkubai.
The Pretext: A Divine Journey During Adhika Masa
To execute his plan without raising immediate suspicion from family members or villagers, Santosh chose a religious cover. He utilized the auspicious period of Adhika Masa an extra month in the Hindu lunar calendar often dedicated to special prayers, pilgrimages, and acts of devotion as a ruse.
Citing the religious significance of the period, Santosh told Sakkubai that they were going to offer special prayers at the famous Chamundeshwari Temple in Marakumbi village, located in the neighboring Bailhongal taluk. Trusting her husband’s sudden spiritual inclination, Sakkubai agreed to the journey, unaware that she was being lured into a fatal trap.
The Execution: Poisoning, Strangulation, and a Staged Accident
The journey quickly turned sinister on the way back from the temple. Santosh had pre-planned the mechanics of the crime to ensure it took place in an isolated area away from their local village jurisdiction. During the trip, Santosh bought a soft drink and secretly spiked it with a lethal cocktail of rat poison and crushed glass, offering it to Sakkubai as a holy offering. As they rode on his motorcycle through a deserted stretch of road, the chemical mixture took effect, making Sakkubai severely ill and physically incapacitated.
Seizing the vulnerability of his incapacitated wife, Santosh pulled over into a secluded area where he physically assaulted and strangled her to death to guarantee she would not survive. Intent on escaping justice, Santosh then attempted to stage a complex, horrific illusion. He placed Sakkubai’s body on the ground, deliberately threw his motorcycle over her corpse, and even inflicted minor injuries upon himself to mimic the aftermath of a violent road crash.
The Discovery: Deception Unravels under Police Interrogation
Following the setup, Santosh frantically contacted emergency services and family members, weeping and claiming that they had met with a devastating road accident that instantly took his wife’s life. However, when the Gokak Rural Police arrived at the scene, the physical evidence simply did not align with a standard motorcycle crash. Investigators and medical examiners noted that Sakkubai’s internal and external injuries pointed heavily toward chemical poisoning and asphyxiation rather than blunt force trauma from a fall. Furthermore, Santosh’s highly erratic behavior and minor, superficial scratches raised immediate suspicion.
The police detained Santosh for a formal interrogation. Under intense, structured questioning by detectives who pointed out the scientific inconsistencies between his story and the forensic reality of the crime scene, Santosh’s composure collapsed. He broke down and confessed to the murder.
Current Legal Status
Following his explicit confession, Santosh Patayat was formally arrested by the Gokak Rural Police. A rigorous criminal case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder and creating false evidence to screen an offender.
The police have conducted a thorough forensic analysis of the vehicle and the crime scene, and further judicial proceedings are underway as the community processes the grim reality of a pilgrimage turned into an act of calculated malice.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This heartbreaking incident highlights a deeply disturbing disregard for human life and the sanctity of trust within a marriage. Luring a lifelong partner into a fatal trap under the guise of spiritual devotion represents a profound ethical failure. True harmony and coexistence within communities cannot be built on deception, infidelity, or violence.
As a society, we must foster deep empathy, open dialogue, and a commitment to resolve domestic fractures peacefully through lawful separation rather than resorting to brutal violence. Our thoughts rest with Sakkubai’s grieving family, and we hope the legal system acts swiftly to deliver justice.
