A violent political clash in Ballari, Karnataka, on New Year’s Day 2026 resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Congress worker named Rajashekhar.
The conflict erupted outside the residence of KRPP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy when supporters of Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy attempted to install banners for an upcoming Valmiki statue unveiling. The confrontation escalated from stone-pelting to gunfire, reportedly involving a private gunman.
While Janardhana Reddy alleged a targeted assassination attempt against him, Bharath Reddy accused his rival of sabotaging a community event. Police have since booked 11 individuals, including Janardhana Reddy and BJP leader B. Sriramulu.

A Volatile Dispute
The unrest was triggered by a disagreement over promotional material ahead of a grand ceremony to unveil a Maharshi Valmiki statue. Supporters of Nara Bharath Reddy were erecting banners along Siruguppa Road in the Havambavi area, specifically near Janardhana Reddy’s home.
Janardhana Reddy’s supporters raised sharp objections to the placement, leading to a heated verbal spat. This quickly spiralled into a physical brawl with both sides engaging in stone-pelting. The situation turned lethal when a gunman associated with a Congress aide allegedly fired rounds, leading to the fatal injury of a young worker.
Official Investigations
Ballari police authorities confirmed that the situation required mild force to disperse the agitated crowds. An FIR has been registered at the Brucepet Police Station against Janardhana Reddy, his brother Somasekhar Reddy, and former minister B. Sriramulu on charges including murder and rioting.
Janardhana Reddy claimed that Congress “criminals” tried to “finish him off” the moment he stepped out of his car. Conversely, Bharath Reddy dismissed these claims, stating that the banners were on public streets and that his rivals simply wanted to disrupt a programme that had massive community support.

Heightened Security
Following the death of Rajashekhar, Ballari has been placed under tight security with a ban on large gatherings in the affected areas. Additional police personnel have been deployed to prevent retaliatory violence between the two factions.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over the Valmiki community event, which was intended to be a cross-party celebration.
Investigators are currently forensic-testing the bullet casings found at the scene to identify the specific weapon used. The tragic loss of life has once again highlighted the dangerous intersection of local muscle power and political campaigning in the region.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we are deeply saddened by the loss of a young life to the fires of political rivalry. This tragedy highlights a disturbing trend where democratic competition is replaced by physical aggression and the use of firearms.
Political leaders must act as pillars of peace rather than catalysts for division; when the rhetoric of power outweighs the value of human life, the entire community suffers.
We call for a transparent and swift judicial investigation to ensure that those responsible, regardless of their political stature, are held accountable. Only through dialogue and mutual respect can we hope to restore the harmony that our society deserves.
