The Karnataka State Department of Food Safety and Drug Control has banned the use and distribution of 15 pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, including the widely used Pomol-650 paracetamol tablets and O Shanti Gold Class Kumkum, after laboratory tests in May 2025 found them unsafe for human and veterinary use.

Officials have directed pharmacies, hospitals, and the public to immediately stop using or selling these items, citing serious health risks. The ban, which includes injectables, syrups, and even a veterinary vaccine component, follows rigorous sample testing and aims to safeguard public health, with strict action promised against violators.

Public Safety Alert: Immediate Ban on Unsafe Products

Among the banned products, Pomol-650 paracetamol tablets (manufactured by Aban Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., Mysuru) and O Shanti Gold Class Kumkum (produced by N Ranga Rao & Sons Pvt. Ltd., Mysuru) are prominent.

The list also features injectable solutions like Compound Sodium Lactate Injection IP, MITO Q7 Syrup, Pantocot-DSR capsules, and veterinary products such as sterile diluents for poultry vaccines.

“I urge all chemists, doctors, hospitals, and nursing homes to immediately stop stocking, selling, or using these products. If you have any stock, inform your local Drugs Inspector or Assistant Drugs Controller at once. Your safety is our top priority,” said Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Background: How the Crisis Unfolded

The state’s Food Safety and Drug Administration collected samples of various pharmaceutical and cosmetic products in May 2025. Laboratory tests revealed that these products were “not of standard quality,” posing potential health risks to consumers and animals.

Authorities have issued a circular mandating immediate compliance, warning of strict action against those who continue to distribute or use the banned items. The public has been strongly advised to check their medicine cabinets and avoid any products on the official list. In a recent update, the Deputy Drugs Controller (DDC) has also urged the public to not use these drugs and to report any stock immediately
