India is observing the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26 to honour the courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of the Indian Armed Forces who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. The day commemorates the successful completion of Operation Vijay, through which India reclaimed strategic mountain positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir that had been occupied by Pakistani soldiers and armed infiltrators.
Across the country, tributes are being paid at war memorials, military stations, schools and public institutions, with the main ceremony taking place at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several military leaders paid homage to the fallen heroes, remembering their extraordinary courage and reaffirming the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty.
The day serves not only as a reminder of India’s military victory but also of the immense human cost of war and the sacrifices made by hundreds of soldiers who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
Operation Vijay
The Kargil War began in May 1999, when Pakistani soldiers and armed militants crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and secretly occupied several strategic mountain peaks in the Kargil, Dras, Batalik and Mushkoh sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. Their objective was to disrupt the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, a crucial supply route for the Indian Army, and alter the military balance in the region. In response, India launched Operation Vijay, one of the largest military operations undertaken after the 1971 war. Fighting at altitudes of over 16,000 to 18,000 feet, Indian soldiers battled freezing temperatures, steep rocky cliffs and relentless enemy fire to recapture the occupied positions. After nearly two months of intense combat, India successfully regained control of the infiltrated territories, and on July 26, 1999, declared the mission accomplished.
The conflict claimed the lives of 527 Indian soldiers, while more than 1,300 personnel were wounded. Their courage was recognised through some of the country’s highest gallantry awards. Captain Vikram Batra, whose famous words “Yeh Dil Maange More!” became synonymous with bravery, was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his leadership during the capture of Point 4875. Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar also received the Param Vir Chakra for displaying exceptional valour during the conflict.
While Capt. Batra and Lt. Pandey were honoured posthumously, Grenadier Yadav and Rifleman Kumar survived the war and continue to inspire generations with their stories of courage. Several other officers and soldiers received the Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra and other gallantry honours for their extraordinary service.
Paying tribute on the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu said the unmatched bravery, determination and patriotism displayed by the soldiers during the Kargil War would continue to inspire every Indian. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the sacrifices of the fallen heroes, saying the nation remains forever indebted to them, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Armed Forces remain fully prepared to respond to any challenge that threatens India’s security and territorial integrity.
A Legacy of Courage That Lives On
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year to ensure that the sacrifices made during the conflict are never forgotten. The Kargil War Memorial at Dras, built in honour of the fallen soldiers, has become a symbol of remembrance and patriotism, drawing thousands of visitors annually. Wreath-laying ceremonies, military parades, exhibitions, cultural programmes and interactions with war veterans are organised across the country to educate younger generations about the significance of the conflict.
The war also became a turning point for India’s defence strategy. Following the conflict, the country strengthened surveillance along the Line of Control, enhanced intelligence coordination, modernised military equipment and improved high-altitude warfare capabilities. The conflict highlighted the importance of preparedness, technological advancement and seamless coordination between the Army, Air Force and other security agencies. More than two decades later, the stories of Kargil’s heroes continue to be part of school curricula, documentaries and public commemorations, reminding citizens of the extraordinary resilience displayed by the Armed Forces under some of the world’s harshest combat conditions.
