Justice Yashwant Varma, a judge of the Delhi High Court, is embroiled in controversy following the discovery of burnt currency notes at his official residence after a fire on March 14, 2025. The Supreme Court has formed a three-member inquiry panel to investigate the incident, where allegations suggest that a substantial amount of unaccounted cash, reportedly around ₹15 crores, was found.

Justice Varma vehemently denies any wrongdoing, asserting that he is a victim of a conspiracy aimed at maligning his reputation. The situation has sparked significant debate regarding judicial integrity and accountability in India.

Findings from the Inquiry Report

A fire broke out in a storeroom at Justice Varma’s residence located in Tughlak Crescent, New Delhi. The inquiry report submitted by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay of the Delhi High Court revealed that firefighters discovered burnt currency notes among the debris during their response to the incident.

Allegations have emerged that up to ₹15 crores in unaccounted cash was found in the storeroom, which is typically used for storing household items and is accessible to domestic staff and CPWD workers. Following the fire, some debris and half-burnt items were removed from the storeroom on March 15, raising concerns about potential evidence tampering.

The Supreme Court has directed Justice Varma to preserve all data and messages on his phone and has sought security records from the past six months as part of the ongoing investigation. The inquiry panel will examine forensic findings related to the alleged cash recovery and assess whether there is any direct link between Justice Varma or his family and the cash found.

Justice Varma’s Defence

In response to these allegations, Justice Varma has strongly refuted any claims linking him or his family to the cash reportedly found at his residence. He stated, “No cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by me or any of my family members,” calling the suggestion preposterous. He emphasized that he was away from Delhi during Holi celebrations and described the storeroom as a common area frequently used by staff members.

Justice Varma expressed serious concerns about evidence integrity, claiming that when he inspected the storeroom shortly after the fire, no cash was present. He referred to a video shared with him later that depicted evidence contrary to his observations, which he believes points to an orchestrated effort to tarnish his reputation. Furthermore, he highlighted previous online allegations made against him in December 2024 as part of an ongoing campaign to undermine his credibility.

Judicial Integrity Under Scrutiny

The Supreme Court has established a three-member panel tasked with investigating this matter further. The panel includes Chief Justices Sheel Nagu (Punjab & Haryana High Court), G.S. Sandhawalia (Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Judge Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court). Their mandate is to assess Justice Varma’s response alongside forensic findings related to the case.

The controversy surrounding Justice Varma has prompted senior advocates and legal experts to voice their concerns regarding judicial integrity in India. Prominent figures have called for immediate reforms aimed at enhancing transparency within judicial processes, emphasizing that incidents like this one erode public trust in judicial institutions. The inquiry committee is expected to submit its findings to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The ongoing situation surrounding Justice Yashwant Varma serves as a critical reminder of pressing issues related to transparency and accountability within India’s judiciary system. This incident raises vital questions about how evidence is handled within judicial processes and what safeguards are necessary to prevent potential abuses of power.
