Student leader and Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) vice-president Devendra Nath Mahto has emerged as the face of Jharkhand’s ongoing student movement after launching an indefinite hunger strike in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) and other government recruitment agencies.
The protest, which has drawn support from students and job aspirants across the state, demands a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the alleged irregularities, cancellation of recruitment processes found to be tainted, and reforms to ensure greater transparency and accountability. Mahto and fellow protesters argue that repeated allegations of paper leaks, irregular appointments and delays have eroded the confidence of thousands of aspirants preparing for government jobs.
While the movement has continued to gather momentum, the Jharkhand government has not announced a CBI or ED investigation, and officials have maintained that recruitment processes are carried out in accordance with prescribed rules. No formal decision has yet been taken on the protesters’ key demands.
Students Intensify Protest
The indefinite hunger strike has become one of Jharkhand’s most prominent student-led protests in recent months, with demonstrators gathering in Ranchi to demand accountability over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations. Mahto, who serves as the vice-president of the JLKM and has long been associated with student activism, has maintained that the issue extends beyond a single recruitment examination and reflects a wider crisis of trust in the state’s recruitment system. According to the protesters, only an independent investigation by the CBI and the ED can restore confidence among candidates who have spent years preparing for competitive examinations.
Student groups have said the agitation is aimed at securing justice for deserving aspirants rather than serving any political interest. Alongside calls for independent investigations, protesters are demanding stronger safeguards against examination malpractice, timely completion of recruitment processes and greater transparency in public hiring. As Mahto continues his indefinite fast, students from several districts have extended solidarity through demonstrations and public meetings, turning the protest into a broader campaign for recruitment reforms.
Despite the growing demonstrations, there has been no official acceptance of the demand for a CBI or ED probe. Government officials have maintained that recruitment examinations are conducted under established procedures, while no announcement has been made regarding the cancellation or review of the recruitment processes cited by the protesters.
A Long-Running Campaign
The current agitation follows months of growing dissatisfaction among students over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations in Jharkhand. Allegations relating to examination management, recruitment delays and transparency have periodically triggered protests, with aspirants repeatedly urging the government to strengthen oversight and improve accountability. These concerns have gradually evolved into a wider movement seeking structural reforms in the state’s recruitment system.
Although Mahto is now the vice-president of the JLKM and contested both the 2024 Lok Sabha election as an Independent candidate and the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly election on a JLKM ticket, he has remained active in student-led campaigns concerning recruitment examinations. Protesters insist that the current hunger strike is centred on the interests of students and job aspirants rather than electoral politics. They argue that recurring allegations surrounding recruitment examinations have affected the careers and morale of thousands of young people who invest years preparing for government jobs, making transparent investigations and institutional reforms essential to restoring public trust.
The movement has also received support from sections of civil society and public figures who have called for a fair resolution to the issue. However, as of now, the state government has not indicated whether it will order an independent investigation or introduce fresh measures to address the protesters’ demands.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Government recruitment examinations represent opportunity, aspiration and social mobility for millions of young Indians.
