In a deeply distressing incident from Sangrambhata village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, Amir Mushtaq allegedly murdered his wife, Yasmina Begum, only 16 days after their wedding. The couple had solemnised their marriage on August 18, 2025, but within weeks, the joyous beginning turned into a nightmare.

On the night of September 1-2, Amir reportedly attacked Yasmina with a sharp weapon at their home, fatally wounding her. She succumbed to her injuries before any medical aid could reach her. Amir was arrested by the local police soon after and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Authorities have recovered the weapon used and are investigating the motive behind this brutal act.

Community Mourns, Police Take Swift Action

Neighbours in Sangrambhata were alerted by screams and cries from the couple’s home around midnight. They rushed to the scene only to find Yasmina grievously injured and lying in a pool of blood. Despite immediate attempts to get help, she died at the spot. Local police promptly detained Amir Mushtaq and assured the public that the case is being treated with urgency.

Superintendent of Police Abdul Qayoom stated, “We have registered a murder case and have recovered the weapon. The investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances and the cause behind this tragic incident.” The tight-knit community is in shock, describing Yasmina as a gentle and kind-hearted woman whose life was cruelly cut short.

Domestic Violence: A Silent Crisis Exposed

This tragic death casts a harsh light on the pervasive yet often hidden issue of domestic violence in Jammu and Kashmir. While family members claim the newlyweds didn’t publicly display any conflicts, incidents like these reveal how silent suffering can escalate with devastating consequences. According to police records, the region has witnessed an uptick in complaints related to domestic violence in recent years, a trend experts link to societal taboos preventing women from speaking out.

Community leaders and women’s rights activists in Kishtwar have called for stronger protective measures, including support networks, awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement of laws to safeguard women’s rights and lives.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective: Embracing Dialogue and Change

This harrowing incident must propel society to confront domestic violence with renewed commitment to peace, empathy, and justice. Marriage, a bond built on trust and respect, should never be marred by fear or violence.

It is imperative that communities foster safe spaces where women can seek help without stigma or threats. Law enforcement must act decisively while social systems should support survivors through counselling and empowerment.
